By Chronicle Staff
February 24, 2019

Computer science and engineering are two well-paying fields in which women have long been underrepresented. Only four colleges with at least 50 bachelor’s-degree recipients in computer science in 2016-17 awarded more than half of such degrees to women, and one of those was a women’s college. Only three colleges with at least 50 bachelor’s-degree recipients in engineering in 2016-17 awarded more than half of such degrees to women. Note: The number of bachelor’s degrees awarded represents both first and second majors in computer science and engineering during the 2016-17 academic year at four-year, degree-granting public and private nonprofit colleges in the United States that are eligible to receive Title IV federal financial aid. Colleges are ranked by the percentage of such awards granted to women in 2016-17. Tied institutions are listed alphabetically. Only colleges with at least 50 majors in computer science or engineering appear in the rankings, but the overall numbers for each discipline represent all institutions that awarded at least one bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering in 2016-17 or 2009-10. In this table, “computer science” represents all fields included in the broad category “Computer and information sciences and support services.” “Engineering” represents all engineering fields, like civil engineering and systems engineering, but excludes “engineering technologies and engineering-related fields.” The percentage-point change for colleges that did not have any bachelor’s degrees awarded in those majors in 2009-10 but did in 2016-17 is represented with a dash. Questions or comments on the Chronicle List should be sent to Ruth Hammond.
